Although the history of vending machines is quite old, Smart card based vending machines are one of the latest advancements in the field. Currently AKSA-SDS is the only provider of smart card Vending Machines across the country, providing leading-edge technology to enable innovative smart card application in this field. The core advantage of using a re-chargeable smart card instead of coins and currency notes is the “cash-free” nature of the product. A single card can be used to buy a variety of items across different Vending Machines designed for various clients. Items like Cold drinks, Snacks and Cigarettes can be purchased with a single card across Pakistan, yet maintaining a strict sales control protocol. High Density Reader (HDR):

AKSA-SDS and MagTek, Inc. USA started a long term and strategic partnership in 2002 to efficiently bind AKSA-SDS's technical capabilities with MagTek's vast experience. The result has been development and marketing of cost efficient and user friendly products. AKSA-SDS is the sole producer / dealer of MagTek products in Pakistan. We provide after sales repair and replacement services for MagTek products in Pakistan. AKSA-SDS and MagTek started a joint project in 2001 to build the prototype for the world's first High Density Card Reader, “HDR”. This would be the first effort to build a design complaint with the ISO-7811-7 standard. In fact, AKSA-SDS worked closely with MagTek to document a part of the standard. The highlights of the new standard were to double the data capacity on the magnetic card without increasing the size (like your credit cards) and to add the “error-correction” feature. AKSA-SDS was assigned to design a working unit of such a High Density Reader which can faithfully read the new cards based on ISO-7811-7. This included an Analog Design front end with the magnetic head, an embedded system to process card information and a complete Reed Solomon based error correction system. The design was successfully completed in time and was displayed at the CardTech show in New Orleans USA in early 2002. The 2nd phase which started in 2nd quarter of 2002 included the design of the same system on an ASIC. The completed work was handed over to MagTek in August 2003.
Some salient features of the prototype were:


• Highly optimized firmware for the Micro controller using Assembly and C.
• 56kbps communication with the PC and Self Reset feature in case of an abnormal operation.
• Software provides statistics of errors occurred.
• Highly efficient Error Correction scheme (Reed Solomon) used in PC software to correct for read errors.
